3 Simple Steps To Grow Your Email List

In just a few minutes of work.

Welcome to the 40th issue of Magnetic Marketing. The newsletter as good as that feeling when you perfectly time how long your bag of popcorn should be in the microwave.

If you were forwarded this email, you can start getting free weekly marketing tips delivered to your inbox by clicking below:

💰 Where's my money, Joe?

In my last newsletter of 2022, I offered you all the chance to win $50. All you needed to do was reply to the newsletter with some feedback to help improve the newsletter in 2023.

Thank you so much to everybody that responded.

A couple of you asked for a cleaner design with clear section dividers, section headers, etc. Let me know how today's issue came out (peep those magnet dividers 👀)!

But now for the main event... the winner of the $50 venmo... drumroll please...

The $50 goes to Seth Nenstiel! 👏 Please reply to this email with your venmo username (or preferred payment method) and I'll send that $50 over to you asap!

📧 Today's Marketing Breakdown:

One of my main goals for 2023 is to provide more free value for my audience — on Twitter, LinkedIn, and most importantly for my newsletter subs :)

I started things off by posting a tweet a few days ago asking who wanted help with their emails. Thomas replied by saying that he wants to grow his email list:

So today's breakdown is all about how I would grow an email list if I was in Thomas' shoes. Let's dive in 👇

🧲 Step 1: The Email Form Copy

The first thing I did was go to Thomas' website where he hosts his email collection form:

Here's a quick screenshot:

Not bad. It's very clear what you will get by signing up for his newsletter — actionable tips on systems & productivity.

Clear is good — but we can do even better.

Scrolling down further on this page, I see an awesome resource - his Free Notion Task Manager 👇

I think Thomas is burying the lead here — specifically his lead magnet.

Recommendation: Move the lead magnet up on the page to right above his email collection form.

Here's how I'd update the copy accordingly 👇

That's a much more compelling reason for me to give up my email to Thomas → A free task manager + actionable tips every week.

Recommendation: I would also add a piece of social proof with the last line: "Join 1,000+ other readers today."

I don't how big Thomas' list actually is, but even if it's smaller than 1,000, any number shows some level of credibility.

These updates on their own should lead to a higher signup rate - but I think we can still do better.

🧲 Step 2: Imagery + CTA

Thomas includes an image of himself smiling which is great. It gives the newsletter a personal touch to it.

Recommendation: But now that we've added his Free Notion Task Manager into the mix, I think we'd be better off including a picture of the task manager and moving that image of Thomas somewhere else (sorry bud, no hard feelings 😉).

Clicking around his site, I see that he already has the image we're looking for. Here's what the final version might look like 👇

Last but not least, the "Join" CTA is a little weak. We want this "Call To Action" to be a "Call To Value"

Recommendation: here are a few different options I'd consider:

  • Give Me Free Access

  • Start Getting Sh*t Done

  • Download My Free Task Manager

🧲 Step 3: Delivering The Goods (Via Email)

Those first 2 steps should increase the signup rate for his newsletter — that's the hard part.

Now we want to hook the reader and keep them on the list.

For this part, I'd keep the email very short and value-packed 👇:

Hi Joe,

Here's FREE access to Notion Task Manager so you can start getting sh*t done.

🧲 Closing Thoughts:

I don't know about you, but I feel pretty good about that funnel. I'm looking forward to hearing what Thomas thinks when he sees this!
